    LibGuides, Blog Posts, and Articles, Oh My!

    “Publish, publish, publish!” is a piece of advice commonly offered to students by career services departments in law schools across the country. Student publications typically take the form of law review or bar journal articles or perhaps competition submissions; however, with the advent of accessible Web 2.0 technologies, publishing has evolved to encompass all sorts of content, styles, lengths, and audiences. The Pace Law Library approach has been mostly electronic in nature and incorporates into Pace’s advanced legal research courses portfolio pieces such as student-authored research guides, blog posts, and bar journal articles. Moreover, student notes that satisfy the school’s Upper-Level Writing Requirement are being given greater exposure by posting them to the school’s Digital Commons. The idea was to give students the opportunity to grow their professional portfolios and to increase student publications by taking advantage of existing law school resources and infrastructure. While the benefits of this shift are still being fully realized, tangible results can already be seen

    Oscillations above the barrier in the fusion of 28Si + 28Si

    Fusion cross sections of 28Si + 28Si have been measured in a range above the barrier with a very small energy step (DeltaElab = 0.5 MeV). Regular oscillations have been observed, best evidenced in the first derivative of the energy-weighted excitation function. For the first time, quite different behaviors (the appearance of oscillations and the trend of sub-barrier cross sections) have been reproduced within the same theoretical frame, i.e., the coupled-channel model using the shallow M3Y+repulsion potential. The calculations suggest that channel couplings play an important role in the appearance of the oscillations, and that the simple relation between a peak in the derivative of the energy-weighted cross section and the height of a centrifugal barrier is lost, and so is the interpretation of the second derivative of the excitation function as a barrier distribution for this system, at energies above the Coulomb barrier.Comment: submitted to Physics Letters

    SEISMIC VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT OF FES MEDINA IN MOROCCO

    Abstract. The assessment of seismic vulnerability in the Maghreb area is not yet fully investigated, especially considering the important connection between the vulnerability and traditional housing or construction local types. This paper proposes a methodology for the assessment of seismic vulnerability at territorial scale that is calibrated on the specific characteristics of historical settlements in the North of Morocco, mostly made of patio buildings in aggregate. The proposed methodology is structured to be extended and replicated in other similar contexts and is based on the Vulnerability Index approach proposed by the National Group for Earthquake Defence (Gruppo Nazionale per la Difesa dai Terremoti, GNDT). This method was applied to the Medina of Fes, UNESCO World Heritage site, which has suffered severe damages from historical earthquakes. The study allowed the realization of vulnerability and fragility curves, damage scenarios for different seismic intensity and loss scenarios. The proposed methodology was applied a second time to the case study after a simulated structural retrofitting intervention. The results of this second application allowed to validate the guidelines and the reinforcement strategies calibrated on local construction culture. The results of the vulnerability assessment are also presented through maps in the Geographic Information System (GIS) environment

    Feeding behaviour of dairy cows in forced or free cow traffic in Automatic Milking System (AMS)

    AbstractSeveral options have been suggested in the literature for "inviting" the lactating cows to a milking unit, minimizing the interference with the activities of the cows during the day (eating, drinking, resting) and optimizing the welfare of the animals. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of forced and free cow traffic on feeding behaviour in primiparous (PR) and pluriparous (PL) cows. The trial was carried out in the experimental free stall barn "V. Tadini" equipped with a single box automatic milking system (Galaxy, Milkline) and with a 40 lactating cows group. Cows were fed once a day (at 07:30 a.m.) the same Total Mixed Ration (TMR). During the trial two different cow traffic situations combined with different feeds management were tested. In the 1st period forced cow traffic (FC) was used; in the 2nd period free cow traffic (FR) but with an increase of the concentrate fed in the milking unit (+1.5 kg/head/day) and a reduction of the concentrate percentage in TMR (from 44.5 to ..

    Temporal Rainbow Scattering at Boundary-Induced Time Interfaces

    Since the dawn of modern optics and electromagnetics, optical prism is one of the most fascinating optical elements for refracting light. Exploiting its frequency dispersive behaviour, a prism is able to refract different frequencies in different directions, realizing polychromatic light rainbows. Recently, thanks to their engineerable electromagnetic response, metamaterials have been exploited for achieving novel refractive scattering processes, going beyond the classical prism effects. In this Manuscript, we report on a novel rainbow-like scattering process taking place at the interface of a boundary-induced temporal metamaterial realized by instantaneously opening the boundary conditions of a parallel plate waveguide. Changing abruptly the conductivity of one of the two metallic plates, we demonstrate that an equivalent temporal interface between two different media is realized, and the monochromatic wave propagating into the waveguide gets scattered into a polychromatic rainbow in free-space. We derive the relationships between the waveguide mode and the raising rainbow in terms of scattered amplitude and frequencies as a function of the elevation angle with respect to the waveguide axis. We apply the underlying physics to control the temporal rainbow by imposing a principal direction of scattering by design. Full-wave numerical simulations are performed for computing the rainbow temporal scattering and verifying the design guidelines for achieving controlled temporal rainbow scattering.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, Appendi
